Isambard Brunel

Isambard Brunel was a great engineer. He built bridges, railways, tunnels, and boats. But what do we know about his life and work?

Brunel was born in Portsmouth in the south of England on April 9, 1806. His mother was English, but his father, Marc Brunel, was French. His father was a famous engineer in France, but he left his country in 1793. First he went to the United States and then to England, where he married an English woman in 1799. Isambard went to school in England and France, and spoke English and French.

When he returned to England from school in France, Brunel went to work for his father. For his first job, he and his father built a tunnel under the River Thames in London. Then, in 1831, Brunel won a big competition. It was for a bridge across the River Avon in Bristol in the south of England. The Clifton Suspension Bridge took 30 years to build, but today it is one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

In 1833, Brunel got a new job. He became chief engineer for the Great Western Railway Company, and work began on the train line from London to Bristol. Today, when you travel to Bristol by train, you go over beautiful bridges and through fantastic tunnels – Brunel built them all.  In addition to bridges, tunnels and railways, Brunel designed some famous boats. The Great Western, built in 1837, was the first steamship to go across the Atlantic Ocean to the US. And the Great Eastern, built in 1859, was the biggest boat in the world.

Brunel wasn’t a good businessman. The Great Eastern was very expensive to build and he lost his money. He also smoked a lot every day and worked very hard. He was only 53 when he died on September 15, 1859.

A day in the life of a mail carrier

Peter Simpson is a mail carrier. He comes from a small town in Pennsylvania but now he lives and works in Chicago, a big city in the  United States.

Today, on World News Web, we ask Peter about his life and his job.

How do you start a normal working day, Peter?

Well, I get up at three thirty in the morning. I have breakfast and take a shower. I eat eggs and I always drink a lot of coffee before I start work. It’s dark outside and it isn’t easy to get up when it’s so early and so dark. Then I walk to the mail sorting center. It’s about 20 minutes from my house.

What do you do at the mail sorting center?

I work with ten other mail carriers. We work for four hours putting letters into bags. It isn’t difficult to do but we work very fast.

Then what do you do?

At about 8:30, I take my big bag of letters and walk outside. On a normal day, I deliver letters to 600 addresses.

Do you like your job?

Yes. Well, usually. I don’t like it when it rains. And I don’t like working on Saturday morning when everybody is in bed.  But I meet a lot of people. Old people are very friendly and I always talk to them. Some old people don’t talk to many people in a day so I think it’s important to say hello and be friendly. And after lunch I’m free. I don’t work in the afternoon, so I can go shopping or go biking when other people are at work. That’s great!

Dear Ronald,

I’m going to go camping in the mountains next month. I’m going to go alone. I’m going to take my cell phone, of course. I’m not going to call my friends, but I’m going to text my family every morning. My phone has a camera, so I’m also going to take a lot of pictures. I’m going to send pictures to my family with my text messages.

I’m not going to take any books or magazines. I’m going to take a map of the park. I’m going to camp in the campgrounds. I want to make new friends there. I’m going to take water, and I’m going to get more at the campgrounds. Water is free at the campground. Camping costs $8.00 a night. I’m going to sleep in a tent. I’m not going to buy anything. I’m going to take all my food with me.

I’m not going to have any trouble. I went camping alone last May. It was great. I’m going to leave on June 14th, and I’m going to come back on the 30th, so I’m going to be gone for two weeks.

An amazing musician

My name is Fred Stevens, and I’m a musician. Actually, I’m a classical musician. I started playing the cello when I was six years old. Now I play with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. I love classical music, but I listen to a lot of other things, too. My mp3 player has more than 500 songs on it. I like rock, pop, and hip hop – all kinds of music. Last week I went to a Coldplay concert. They’re really fantastic. They’re one of my favorite bands. I have three of their albums.

My favorite classical musician is – you guessed it – Yo-Yo Ma. He’s probably the most famous cello player in the world, but he doesn’t only play the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. In 2003, Yo-Yo Ma made an album called Obrigado Brazil. In this album he mixed classical cello together with Brazilian music. It’s really amazing.

In 2011, he made an album called The Goat Rodeo Sessions. In this album, Yo-Yo Ma played his cello with American bluegrass musicians. Some people didn’t like this album. But many musicians loved it. Mixing classical music with other kinds of music is really interesting, I think.

You can also hear Yo-Yo Ma’s music in movies. He played music in the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000, Master and Commander in 2003, and Memoirs of a Geisha in 2005. Sometimes I ask myself, “What kind of music does Yo-Yo Ma have on his mp3 player?” I don’t know. But I think he listens to all kinds of music – just like I do!

A man on the moon

On July 21, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong opened the door of the lunar module, the Eagle, and walked outside. He was on the moon. He was the first man in history to walk on the moon. It was a fantastic moment.

A few minutes later, Buzz Aldrin was the second man on the moon. Armstrong and Aldrin had a camera. They took photos and made a movie of their short time on the moon. They also collected information and talked to the American president, Richard Nixon, on the phone. Nixon said it was a “historic phone call.” They placed an American flag there and went back to Earth.

July 21, 1969 was a very important and exciting day. On Earth, a lot of people listened to their radios all day because they wanted to hear the news about the men on the moon. And everybody in the world watched the news to see the first pictures of the men on the moon. Was it true? Was it real? People didn’t believe what they saw. And today, people over 50 can remember where they were when Armstrong walked on the moon.

In November 1969, the Americans traveled to the moon again and everybody watched. In the 1970s, astronauts went on five more trips. But after that, the American government decided that they didn’t want to spend millions and millions of dollars on trips to the moon. The last man on the moon was there in 1972.

A fantastic hotel

Last summer, my wife and I were in Las Vegas for a week. For the first five days, we were with our friends, Jimmy and Diane. They live in Las Vegas. For the last two days, my wife and I were in a beautiful hotel. It was the Venetian Resort Hotel on the Las Vegas strip. The Venetian is modern, luxurious, and very big! There are 7,000 rooms and suites in the hotel, and there were three TVs in our suite—one in the bedroom, one in the living room, and one in the bathroom.

You can find everything at the Venetian. There is a casino in the hotel and there are 17 restaurants. Our first dinner there was at the Bouchon restaurant. It was fantastic – but very expensive!

The hotel is really great! There is a small lake near the entrance, and on the fourth floor there are three swimming pools and a spa. On the second floor, there is a big shopping center with canals and gondolas. We went on a gondola. I thought I was in Venice!

There are a lot of things to do at the Venetian. You can visit Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum with statues of famous Hollywood actors. You can go to the nightclub or see at show at one of the theaters. There are three of them! We weren’t interested in the wax museum or the nightclub, but on Sunday evening there was a great show at the Blue Man Theater, and an art exhibition at the hotel’s art gallery.

Raising money for the art club

Our university art club is raising money for our activities this year. We need money for trips to museums. We usually go to art museums four times a year. We choose a different museum each time, and we see a lot of different kinds of art. It’s really interesting.

Today is one of our big fundraising days. Members of our club are doing different things to raise money. The first-year students are washing cars in the park downtown. People pay us ten dollars for each car. It’s nice and sunny today, so they’re having fun!

The second-year students are selling muffins, brownies, and cookies in the student center at the university. Cookies and brownies are two dollars each, and muffins are three dollars. Oh, and they’re selling coffee, too. I think it only costs one dollar.

Third-year and fourth-year students are raising money in the park, too. They’re drawing pictures of people. It only takes about fifteen minutes to draw a person’s picture. For twenty dollars, you can have a black-and-white picture. Or for twenty-five dollars, you can get a picture in color.

We usually raise about six hundred dollars on our fundraising day. Raising money is hard work, but it’s fun, too.

A different life

Sara Huntingdon works for a children’s organization in Africa. Every day, she writes her blog for an online news website.

Wednesday, July 25

Every morning, I get up at six o’clock and go to the camp. One thousand families live there. They don’t have much food or water.

I sometimes work in the school. It is in a big, old house near the camp, and it is open to children from five to twelve years old. It’s usually hot inside. I teach classes for five hours.

When the children get to school at a quarter after seven, they go into the house and meet their friends. They talk and play games. They like games! Then we start classes at a quarter after eight. I teach English. The children can speak English, but they can’t write in English. They have a lot of questions. They have questions about my life in the United States – and about my boyfriend! I cook some food, and they eat it before they go home. They go back to their families in the afternoon, and I send email to my family and my boyfriend.  I eat dinner, and I go to bed at about ten o’clock.
